Behind the bumblebee door knocker, an explosion of sunshine yellow welcomes you as you enter the classically detailed hallway. With a carpet runner from Stark and performance wallcovering from Tektura, this busy central hub is set up to withstand the knocks of a young family.
One of our go-to signature pieces to include in an entrance hall is a bench seat with shoe storage. Whether you’re a shoes-off household or not, we all need somewhere to change our footwear and a comfy perch near the door is the ideal solution.
As an accomplished pianist, one of the key elements of the brief was to include space for a small baby grand, not only for our client to play, but so she could pass on a love and appreciation of music to their children from a young age. By opening up these two rooms, reinforcing the floors and including plenty of soft, textural surfaces to help with acoustics, we were able to give them enough space not only for the Kawai piano but room enough to sit, relax and enjoy listening to music too.
As with all our schemes, adding layers of light not only allows the family to use the room throughout the day, but elements can be turned on or off depending on the activity. All on for a music lesson but then just highlight the beautiful Chesney’s fireplace and Kelly Werstler backed shelves for a moody fireside evening.
The removal of a pair of tired sliding doors revealed that not only had the floor in this room been raised but the ceiling had been lowered too! By taking the room back to its original proportions, it felt like we had doubled the size of the room, and this allowed us to do so much more with the detailing. A coffered ceiling with a hand-painted gold centre just feels like sunshine whatever the weather, and oversized fitted joinery means there’s plenty of space for toys, games consoles and all modern-life’s paraphernalia. A generous sofa from Roche Bobois feels like hug, creating a perfect space for day-to-day living.
Taking a leaf from the revered book of interior designer Anouska Hempel, we commissioned a pair of over-size louvre doors to separate the TV and living rooms. They can be fully open allowing freedom of movement between both spaces, drawn shut with louvres open, or closed completely for an entirely different feel in the room.
Another key part of the brief from the clients was a need to update the 80’s galley kitchen into one that works as a cooking, dining, eating and social space. Some hefty steel beams allowed us open up the internal walls to make best use of the space; a large island not only provides ample storage but gives a wonderful large work surface for cooking and baking with the children. The conservatory-style dining area helps link the house with the garden and the addition of a rather spectacular Bocci light planted up with succulents, really brings the outdoors in.
Classic navy units and Puzzle tiles from Mutina give a calm backdrop to a busy family kitchen.
The joy of bespoke cabinetry means that sauce and spice bottles get measured and everything has its place. A behind-doors breakfast pantry keeps the main counter space clear of appliances and easy to keep tidy. Yes, the spices are in alphabetical order but that’s just our attention to detail…
Adults kitchen on one side, children’s kitchen on the other. We love this room!
The downstairs loo is a room we love designing because it gives us a chance to use some wonderful materials and lighting that makes a huge impact. Here we have Bocci, Mandarin Stone, Not Only White and TOTO.
– A reconfiguration of the stairs to lower ground allowed us to create a go-to entertainment space. A beautiful dual-function pool/dining table from Sir William Bentley Billiards, means the room is just as comfortable for Friday night pool as Sunday family dinners.
On the opposite side of the room, fully upholstered tiered seating has created the perfect lounging space for an at-home cinema.
The coffered ceilings are lit with RGB lighting from Tryka, allowing different settings depending on the mood of the party!
Details such as the bespoke dartboard housing and wall panelling with plush lining mean everything sits harmoniously, exactly where it’s needed.
In a moment of contemplation, Dan enjoying the understated elegance of a room well-restored. This build was not without its challenges, but one we are so proud to have completed.

Designers Statement

There can be nothing more joyous than creating a home for a young and expanding family. A place that can accommodate all their needs including parents who want to entertain friends at home.

The house is a fine Edwardian villa in the leafy suburbs of Chiswick. The building is light and airy with high ceilings. However, there was no flow in the spaces and the kitchen was just a galley as previous extensions were piecemeal. Some of those grand rooms even had the shame of lowered ceilings, raised floors and cheap 70s sliding doors. The whole thing had the air of an outdated bungalow.

With some skilled engineering work, which included removing part of an external wall and moving the staircase to the basement, we managed create rooms that flowed between each other, creating a large family kitchen on the raised ground floor together with playroom, a sizable guest cloakroom, a TV room and an elegant drawing room. With the use of sliding louvre doors, spaces could be made more intimate and private when need be.

The ultimate gem was converting the basement into an entertainment room. This space has everything a family could dream of. A fully functioning bar, a billiard table, and, with a push of a button, curtains close to create a cinema with tiered seating to lounge on with the family.

With the considered use of practical materials, the fabric of this house will last without compromising that touch of glamour that we all need in our lives.
