Space

The ultimate for city living is to have storage for everything. Our role at Studio Hopwood is to make that ideal into reality and to a level that is not only practical but also a thing of beauty. We spend many hours on Vectorworks in the studio draughting bespoke joinery in detail. We also consult with our clients to ensure that we consider everything that needs to be put away from books to clothes, even special drawers for sunglasses and watches. Not an inch of space is wasted.

Once designed we work with a select group of furniture makers who specialise in bespoke fitted furniture. With our comprehensive drawings, we can collaborate with the maker to achieve the best result cost wise, technically and aesthetically. For the project seen in the photos we chose to work with Doig Furniture. Duncan Doig and his team have the rare ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with the latest technologies in their state-of-the-art workshops at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in Oxfordshire. They have the skill set to realise our designs using highly polished lacquers, silk door coverings, bronze texture finishes as well as innovative heavy sliding doors and enabling access to complex air cooling machinery behind the wardrobes. A nice touch was to line the insides of the wardrobes with Cedar of Lebanon whose perfume is delicious when sliding the doors open but also repels the dreaded moths.

I do believe that good craftsmanship should be recognised, and it is, by The Furniture Makers’ Company, The City of London Livery Company and charity for the furnishing industry. Whether a student, designer, maker, business owner, retailer, current or former employee, they are there to support you. The livery’s Bespoke Guild Mark is the ultimate accolade for designer-makers, recognising excellence in design, materials, craftsmanship and function for exquisite pieces of furniture made as single items or a limited run of up to 12. It is awarded to only the most meticulous and highly crafted pieces of bespoke furniture and, since its launch in 1958, has been the apex of distinctions for UK designer-makers. I am the chair for the Bespoke Guild Mark and with the committee have now opened the Guild Mark to the world of bespoke fitted furniture because I believe that with this mark the public and designers will be able to commission the finest makers to make their dream a reality in the best possible way.
